In conjuction with Trike Shoppe, LLC, the Lighthouse of Broward has launched a program offering tandem bicycles to help further bring those with sight impairments into mainstream society through an activity that offers both fun and fitness. Tandem bike riding is but one more way to level the playing field for those with sight impairments.
Tom Flohr of Trident Trikes got the ball rolling by donating his new Spike recumbent trike to be raffled on February 23, 2011. The proceeds from raffle ticket sales were used to purchase three Sun Bicycles semi recumbent tandem bicycles at cost. Sun Bicycles also donated a fourth semi recumbent tandem bike for use in the program.
The day of the raffle began admist much fanfare with fellow tandem bike enthusiasts, members of the Lighthouse of Broward, Dory Horowitz, special populations coordinator at Broward County Parks and Recreation division, and press core from the Sun Sentinel all on-hand to witness the event. A mock tandem bike race took place in the parking lot behind Trike Shoppe's store and the winning tandem bike stoker drew the winning raffle ticket for the Trident Spike recumbent trike.

It is our hope that this new tandem bicycles program will bring awareness of how accessible this fun form of exercise is for people of all abilities, including those with sight and other physical impairments.
